Bread is a common daily eat in the house, having two kids who by themselves check the fridge or the bread container every time they feel hungry. My daughter’s favorite bread is named Lakas (strong in English). She eats it with so much gusto, loving its sweet milky taste. Lakas is almost similar to the popular shortbread. There are still many more kinds of bread in the Philippines and their names are one-of-a-kind, a product of Filipino ingenuity. 🙂
If you, by chance, had visited the Philippines, you may have been offered with Pan de sal, sweet version of the Spanish “salt bread” and/or Pan de Coco, a bread with sweetened shredded coconut meat filling, called bukayo.
Aside from those I mentioned, there are many kinds of breads with “funny” names in the Philippines, that even us, Filipinos, wonder how crafty and inventive our bakers in the Country are. 🙂
In my husband’s home city in Bicol, Naga City, I found different kinds of breads with their “unique and quaint names”, and should you wish to know the reason behind their names from the baker, or the saleslady of the bakeshop, they would proudly answer you. So, just to check whether you have eaten these breads, let me name a few, Maligaya/PanDeRegla (one of the bestsellers), Lakas, Bugkos, Hipon, Maalat, Putok, Pinagong, Lambingan and German.
One of the bestsellers is Maligaya, in other areas, they call it Pan De Regla (or a lady with menstruation). Kidding aside, how would one feel to eat this? 🙂 So when I asked the baker, why it was named Maligaya, he said that because the first customer was so delighted and satisfied when he ate the bread, so they named the bread, Maligaya which means happy, but to call it Pan De Regla seems gross. What do you think?
But the bread is soft and fluffy and has a red sweet filling. This is best to eat with coffee or warm milk in the morning or afternoon.
Putok (explosion) bread has a crack on top, and looks like it exploded, hence the name. However, the name also suggests someone who has a bad armpit smell. Come to think of it. 🙂 Would you try and taste it?
This is popular as Bicol have two most active volcanoes that are constantly erupting. Contrary to its name, the bread is a sweet bun (almost like the hot cross bun in a kid’s nursery rhyme) with sugar sprinkled on top that has a shiny crust.
Lakas bread or the sweetheart bread, it’s very interesting to be called as such, has milk toppings and consistency that is almost similar with the short bread. Should you buy this bread, don’t forget to tell your spouse that what he/she is eating is a sweetheart bread. Ohhh… how sweet to hear from someone you love. 🙂
They say it was named Lakas because milk on top of the bread will make you strong. 🙂 We also have Lambingan, the action of being affectionate to someone. It is a double sided bread (no photo included here) with sweet margarine or butter filling. Even in breads, Filipinos put a touch of love and warmth. So when you get to Philippines, don’t forget to buy Sweetheart bread and Lambingan Bread. You’ll surely get “pogi” (handsome/goodlooking) points from your partner.
German bread looks like those authentic German bread but with a twist as it has chocolate fillings. Imagine, Germans eating this bread. 🙂
Bugkos (meaning being tied). As they say, when you share this with your partner, he/she would be so tied up with you, he/she couldn’t leave you anymore. How’s that? I can hear wedding bells…:)
Maalat is a crispy golden yellow cracker that is best when dipped in a hot coffee or milk. But, please be informed that this bread is commonly served on a wake or interment of someone who died. Even I wouldn’t like to buy this often.
Hipon (means shrimp) bread has similarities with shrimp in appearance, but it doesn’t have any taste as shrimp. Don’t be discouraged though, the bread is delicious.
